[glow=gray,1,800]She couldn't change her past... [/glow]The grasses swayed gently, the crisp spring wind blowing them from side to side. It was just one more hot day in the Kalahari desert. The oasis, luckily, had not dried up, and it was rumored that it never would. But then again, who said rumors were ever right?
A young meerkat, around two years old, approached the oasis with a heavy feeling. Her name, Mozart. She was a meerkat who knew what it was like to lose everything. And she knew what it was like to not be able to change any of it. Her past home was gone. She had been exiled from her group, the Whiskers, for having pups. Her pups were killed by the rival gang, the Lazuli. Then, the fire. It killed everyone- her mother, her father, her sisters, her brothers, even her uncle. The only meerkat that had a chance of survival was Shakespere who had disappeared months before. But surely he would never live; he had fought too long.
Mozart, then, was left alone. She had found a new group, the Greco Gang, but was its only member, the big boss- the dominent female. But she was lonely. She wanted company, but... were there even any meerkats in the area? Or would she be forced to leave again.
She moved one of her four-toed paws forward and stopped. She could scent something... someone, approaching. However, thirst drove her forward. Careful to stay in the grasses, she reached the edge of the oasis, not daring to take her eyes off the area. Finally, she stood to her full height- a little over ten inches- balanced on her tail, and waited for whatever it was.
But in the back of her mind she craved for the thing to approach her. She craved company, or death, because she knew nothing more. A single thought crossed her mind at that moment: Why am I doing this? She thought about it for a moment more. She had never been a sentry; she either babysat or foraged. Surely she could find help from someone in the deserted lands. Then, at least, she could drink without fear, hunt without peril, and live, without lonliness.[glow=gray,1,800]Because her future was... ((Nah its a good post ^_^))
The sun was high overhead, beating down upon the parched dusty soil and sand of the desert. Most creatures would have been smart enough to go find shelter at this time of day, the heat was almost unbearable when not in the shade. Even in the spring the ground was hot enough to burn sensitive paws like that of a meerkat. At least one who was used to skulking around in the darkness of night. Most meerkats knew better than to sneak around at night, but it was the best time to travel for one who's pelt was almost as dark as the night's shadows. Dark black orbs were squinted, he'd been traveling all night long and had no rest, food, or water for at least two days. His stomach was growling and thin, obviously empty.
Weary black paws tread lightly across the ground, swift and silent. It wasn't like him to be out at this time of day, not without cover, but his mind was clouded with the promise of water from the smell of the oasis. Nose twitched and whiskers fallowed in motion as he neared the edge of the grass, looking on with great interest and caution. Ears pushed up and he listened, but dared not stand to look over the grass. Predators could be lurking anywhere, especially around the water. Fur over his spine bristled and he moved closer, step by step smelling the ground to make sure no one was near. The scents he found were a few days old, but one lingered on the breeze, not the soil.
Black orbs narrowed, the dark markings around them helping to shade some of the sun away. Fangs bared thorough his blackened lips and nose curled up. In sight was another meerkat, a female from the scent. Slowly he crept forward, keeping his body low to the ground and hoping not to be spotted. The grass from where he stood, went all the way to the edge of the water, maybe if he was lucky he wouldn't be spotted....If I wait until she's not looking, maybe I can sneak a drink without her being any wiser. ...He thought to himself, working his way to the bank, but staying hidden.
He watched for a few moments, waiting for the perfect time to sneak a drink. If this was part of her territory why didn't she have any other members around her? That was what struck Solaris as a bit odd, if she was here with her family, where were they? Eyes kept shifting from the female to the water and back again, mouth starting to water from anticipation. Finely he'd found his chance, and crept to the water's edge, dipping his muzzle down and lapping quietly away while keeping both eyes on the female across the bank.

But Mozart was also looking for her opportunity. She ducked down and took a lap a little after he did. But when she lifted her face to see his, it was not shock that coursed through her body: it was fear. She stood up, her right paw twitching slightly. She took a step forward, for a moment caught in the daydream that her family was by her side. But the moment passed and she was shaken abruptly into her senses. Her family was gone. She was alone, and she had her chance to meet another meerkat, but she was frozen.
Usually, unless he had been evicted or just roving, he should be with his grou. Which means there are other meerkats here... This was her true reson for fear: if she was on another's mob's land, they would either run her off or kill her. But what if...? What if he's been exiled... what if he's looking for a home? It could be my only chance...
With her mind resolute, she approached the newcommer by willing her legs a step forward. Please, don't run, please... "Hello." Her voice had gone unused for days; it was a bit rusty and dry, but not any worse than could be imagined, and her voice flowed a slight bit, bringing a little bit of melody to the harsh Kalahari. What do I say? Tell him my name? Ask if he's in a group? Tell him my family is dead? "My name is Mozart. Do you reside with any colonies in the land?" She tried to act regal, controlled, and dominant, to no avail.
I just hope...

He'd backed away from the water only for a moment as she spotted him, but returned when she didn't sound any sort of alert. His tail stiffened a little, his spine arched as a slight threat to her so that she wouldn't approach. It wasn't necessarily voluntary, but more or less out of reaction to being looked at. Lips rose again to show off his long fangs but only for a moment as his head lowered yet again and he started lapping up the cool water. Its taste was sweet as each drink relieved a parched throat.
Solaris jumped a little at her voice, a clear sign that he hadn't been around anyone in quite some time. Her words came as somewhat of a surprise to him, she apparently wasn't going to run him off without warning, maybe this wasn't her territory. A brow raised but his eyes were still narrowed at her. Muzzle lifted to speak but a soft growl left it instead. "Why do you want to know?" He spoke, rather harshly, but his voice was quiet and held a smooth tone. For a small meerkat he sure did have guts to take on anyone else, especially when he didn't know if there were others around. "No, as a matter of fact, I've seen no others around for miles." He spat, almost as if in disrespect. It wasn't really his fault, most of the others he had met chased him out of their land or bit him.
"Are you here alone or are there others nearby? Are you going to deny me water and shade?" His black paws lifted from the ground as he stood up, balancing and looking across the water towards her. Solaris's pelt was covered in dust, and seemed lighter than it really was, especially around his face where he'd been routing through the sand and dirt for insects that may have been hiding within, but he'd obviously found none. He was dirty and his side was stained with blood from a wound he'd caused in a fight only days ago. He'd yet to actually clean himself off completely. The other meerkat hadn't fared so well, even though it was much larger than himself.

Mozart let out a slight little sigh, something similar to what a dainty old lady would emit. But Mozart was not old, or dainty. She was... a tomboy of sorts, used to play fighting with the guys- and fighting with them, too. And, though she was tough from days of travel, her heart was soft with sympathy towards those who were alone, and knew their place. She went back on four paws and approached the other by two more steps, not taken aback by his arched spine; she was used to hostility, but yet... he seemed a bit... small.
"No other meerkats for miles?" the voice was gradually getting used to itself. "I'm sad to say I'm here alone. I had a family... at my old home. My mother, Flower, was the dominant female, and my father was Zaphod. I had over twenty siblings, but... well, they're all dead now. A fire destroyed my home, my family, and even my enemies. I traveled days alone to try and find a new land. I've found some land that, since you said there were no meerkats around, isn't claimed. I guess I'll make my home there: I have no other choices." The meerkat lowered her head for a moment, remembering her family before looking back at the other of her kind standing before her. When she finally decided to answer is question about the water and shade... "Who am I to deny you water or shade? The oasis is a land of peace; no gang should own this land. It should be for everyone. Besides, do you think I have the authority to run you out? It would be a battle between you and I, and what chances are there that I might win, half-starved and dehydrated?" Her only other responce was a chuckle.
